COVID-19 ANNOUNCEMENT:

After extensive research and abundant, heartfelt deliberation, the West Michigan Youth Sailing Association has decided to cancel all regattas for the summer of 2020. This means that the MYC Junior Race Team will not be racing this summer. As everyone can imagine, this was a very difficult decision to make.

Our number one priority has always been the safety of our young sailors and our coaching staff. To be sure, the Covid-19 pandemic has significantly magnified the importance of conducting our programs in a safe and responsible manner. The appropriate or required preventative measures such as limited group sizes, social-distancing, staff training, extensive equipment sanitization and daily health documentation are simply too cumbersome for us to consistently and confidently accomplish.

Meanwhile, please encourage your young sailors to spend as much time on the water as is safely possible.

Thanks to everyone for your patience and support! We remain hopeful that we will be able to resume full operations in 2021.

It’s Fun to Race and be a Part of the MYC Junior Race Team!

2015jrTeam-300x171Racing is a fun and exciting way to enjoy the sport of sailing. Being part of a very fun team of fellow sailors makes it even more fun!

The MYC Junior Racing Program offers youth sailors age 8-19 several opportunities to explore and experience sailboat racing.

Our Sumer typically starts with a one week Race Camp where experienced sailors continue to sharpen their skills with lots of on-the-water coaching and drills. Sailors who are new to racing will learn about the Racing Rules, how regattas are conducted, and build their confidence through on-the-water coaching. Sailors can register for Race Camp here or on the MYC Sailing School web site.

We also conduct weekly Race Team practices on Wednesday afternoons from 3pm-5:30pm.

The Junior racing season usually includes one Saturday regatta at Muskegon Yacht Club as well as four regional WMYSA Friday regattas where we join sailors from all over West Michigan. Other opportunities for junior sailors include the Butterfly Nationals in July, the WMYA Westerns Regatta in August, and the US Sailing Junior Olympics at Macatawa Bay in October.

Our coaching staff includes sailors with impressive racing backgrounds. Their experience and knowledge will assure that each MYC sailor is prepared for the fun and satisfaction of competitive sailing.

Notes:

  • MYC Junior Races are sailed on Optimists, Butterflies, Laser Radials and Full Rig Lasers
  • WMYSA Regattas are sailed on Optimists, Butterflies, Laser Radials and Full Rig Lasers
  • Parents will be required to assist in transportation of team members and equipment to WMYSA regattas.
  • A Michigan State Law regarding Concussion Awareness took effect in the summer of 2013. Parents of MYC Junior Race Team sailors are now required to read, sign and submit a Concussion Awareness Form to the MYC Junior Racing Program. This form is part of the Race Team Registration form and can also be downloaded by itself from the registration link here on this web site.
