2017 Safety at Sea Seminar
May 6 - May 7
Muskegon Yacht Club will be offering the U.S. Sailing Safety at Sea seminar on Saturday, May 6, 2017, with an optional, hands-on second day on Sunday, May 7, 2017.
The classroom and optional hands-on training in the Safety at Sea curriculum are designed to enhance your sailing skills and help make you, your boat and your crew safer. A panel of professionals, including Brian Adams, Dr. Don Crandall, and Bob Dukesherer, have tailored their presentations to give you as much information as possible. A general overview of the U.S. Sailing Safety at Sea curriculum can be found here: http://www.ussailing.org/education/safety-at-sea/
Many race regulations, including the Chicago Mac Safety Regulations, strongly recommend that at least 30% of each boat’s crew have valid offshore Safety at Sea Certifications (issued within 5 years before the race).
Day one (Saturday) will be held in the 300+ seat Overbrook Theater at Muskegon Community College, 221 S. Quarterline Road, Muskegon, Michigan. Day one topics will include heavy weather sailing techniques, man overboard and safety gear, damage control and repair, assisting other vessels, safety communication devices and EPIRBs, abandon ship and life raft procedures, medical factors and emergencies, and weather forecasting. Case studies will also explore recent sailing incidents and highlight the lessons learned. A continental breakfast, lunch and snacks will be provided.
Day two (Sunday) will be held at Muskegon Yacht Club, 3198 Edgewater Street, Muskegon, Michigan. A limited number of participants will experience hands-on scenarios, including flare use, fire fighting, and actual life raft and PFD deployment in the MYC pool. Lunch will be available for purchase.
Cost is $185 for a single day or $325 for both days. Discounts for U.S. Sailing Members and Muskegon Yacht Club members are available and further described on the registration form.
